In most cases the solder holding the socket in place can start to crack, or the socket itself can start to break due to the daily routine and stresses placed upon the socket through continual use of the laptop. We will always replace this socket with a brand new one. We never reuse DC sockets, or re-solder the existing socket.
The second and more complex aspect of power faults on laptops will be with failed or shorting components on the laptop motherboard. The motherboard contains many power related components taking care of many different tasks in distributing the correct amount of power to each section of the board, if any of these components are not functioning correctly this can cause the laptop to appear dead and not power on at all, or power on then power straight back off again.
